The next in my series of new McCall’s patterns for Summer is this batwing. I love batwings, but I think this one is a bit too much like a smock or poncho or cape. It’s super comfy to wear, but I feel very vulnerable without wearing a tank top or cami underneath. If I lean forward, the front just flops open and I think the smallest breeze will probably blow the thing right off of my head. The neckline is just too low. Next time, I need to modify the pattern by possibly making the shoulder seam allowances something like 2″.

Pattern Description: Misses’ Tops: Very loose-fitting, pullover tops have bias neck binding, front gathered into bib, side front and side back seams, and sleeve openings. I made view B: no gathering on the sleeves or bottom hem and buttons on the bib.

Pattern Sizing: Using my measurements, I cut a size Medium (12/14).

My Shape: 5′ 2″, 35″ high bust, 31″ waist, 38″ hips

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes!

Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions were very easy to follow. I had some logistical issues sewing the front gathered section to the bib, but figured it out eventually.

Construction Tips: Once again, I found it nice to use dental floss to do my gathering. I overlocked all of the raw-edge seams and the bottom hem before finishing it.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I don’t like that this top is so loose. I think that I would feel more secure wearing it if the sleeve seams were different and the neckline was not so low:

Fabric Used: I’m pretty sure I bought this woven fabric from Gorgeous Fabrics or Sawyer Brook Fabrics, but sadly do not recall the fiber content. It might be a rayon.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None, though I’ll probably try and bring up the neck line next time and I may try different sleeve seams.

Conclusion: I think this top is fun. If you’re looking for a very loose, flowing top, this might be good for you. The neckline is quite low and droopy. The top is very open from underneath. So you might feel more comfortable wearing a cami or tank top underneath.
